    • I think the biggest reason for performance and battery gains is the 5nm manufacturing process. Intel has been lagging behind in this regard for years now.

    • Great that Apple is breaking up with Intel The limit of external displays on the M1 MacBook Air and Pro ~ meh. I'm sure there's a work around I think these M1 1st gens is a glimpse of what's to come. Looking forward to the MacBook Pro 14(?) and 16. I found the ARM are really slow they're not given enough onboard RAM to work with. Speaking from experience with Hardkernel Odroid C2 and Raspberry Pi 4 which in lack GPU performance and driver support from other Linux distro. I still use it for KODI and web design. Future releases of the Apple Silicon chips will come in higher numbers CPU and GPU cores with more UMA memory. I see render farms tweaking their racks for M1s instead of intel. A side note Microsoft Windows has a ARM version of the OS. Looking forward to them updating that, not that I'm needing Windows ARM version. I wonder what's the future of eGPUs

    • Lack of ports & the touch bar are total deal-breakers (recent OS releases and the relentless, accelerating reduction of backward compatibility only add salt to the wounds). I'm using a 2012 MBP and it still isn't looking like Apple will be putting out anything I'd want to upgrade to. I'm this close to switching to Windows, but evaluating the laptop options in that market is daunting.

I don’t have to deal with yelling, over dramatic bs, you present the information in a very calm and approachable way. Second, the information is concise, to the point, and you generally address many of the questions that I have coming into a video or those that pop up along the way. Finally I appreciate your opinion and insight as a consumer. Great video and look forward to many more. Thanks, Doug

  • For the XCode compilation. I wonder if you're actually compiling for the same architecture, what kind of ouput do you get. I have a lot of questions here : - What is the project ? - What is the target architecture(s) (Are we doing cross compilation) ? - What is the output binary performance ? - What version of the compiler are you using on each hardware ? I'm sure they did a pretty good job with this, but I wonder were are the pitfalls. Have a 4 lower power cores can give you a better w/h so better battery. But a larger cache and a large memory bus can only go so far. I wonder were are the pitfalls.

  • Thanks for the balanced review. I'm a Computer Agnostic, either Linux, Windows of OSX is fine and I focus on the software on which I actually work. These new Mac finally look very promising, but for now, I don't feel confident into changing my Macbook pro2016 (my work machine): all my current softwares works fine on High Sierra which i did not upgrade because of compatibility issues with 32Bit software. These M1 looks very good but the amount of compatibility issues I would find would be too disruptive at the moment meaning a big investment in new optimize software. Sooner or later all Computer have to be replaced and when the time comes, I believe this apple chip will have improved by bounds and leaps by the time my laptop will be ready for retirement. ARM is the future, no doubt, both on OSX and PC. I'm happy to see Apple innovate after so many years of slumber where they were just selling "glorified PCs"

  • So many positive reviews I've been a hardcore Windows user but I never went for Mac because of compatibility. Now that I jumped to Linux and feel more comfy with Unix in general, I was thinking of jumping ship and switching completely to the Mac ecosystem. Now, with this new M1 chip, I am 90% convinced into doing that leap. I'll wait for next year (and save up for the mac air) since first models usually come with issues. Also I'm curious about this new macbook's lifespan. Sure, older macbooks had intel chips but even the 2012 models are still solid and look like they'll still be working in the future. Will Apple still give the same estimated lifespan of 10+ years for these macbooks? If not, then I'm not sure.

  • I remember the first ARM based machine, the Acorn Archimedes. Back in the 1980's I worked in an Acorn computer dealer in the UK, the popular computer then was the BBC Micro made by Acorn, it was a 2 mhz 6502 processor 32k of ram. It ran the first ever true 3D game which was called Elite.. anyway the Archimedes was released in about 1987 and instead of the 6502 it had a ARM chip and the performance numbers were off the scale, but it was very expensive with next to no software support but there as a version of Elite for it. Other than schools, universities and research use I only ever sold one to a member of the public... and he bought it to play Elite! For those that do not know, Acorn Computer became ARM, I am sure this is meaningless to non-British non-nerds.

  • At what point (in how many months/years) will Apple require users to use all M1 native software and stop supporting Universal and Rosetta 2 applications? Last time they transitioned from PPC to Intel, how many years before PPC apps no longer ran on intel Macs with Rosetta 1? How many years before they stopped shipping universal apps and only started shipping intel only apps? This time around, how long do I have before my intel apps stops working via Rosetta 2 on my M1 Macs? How long before they stop universal apps and they start shipping only M1 native apps?

    Rob OoRob Oo2 päivää sitten
  • I think its hard to call it a "Gen 1" if you're looking through the lens of it just only being on these devices. There will probably a M1X that hits the MacBook Pro (4 thunderbolt ports) and 16in MacBook Pro. These are just the "lower" end devices of Apple's device spectrum. I think its perfectly fine for what it is right now, and 2021 we will get essentially the same chip with either a 16 or 32 core GPU. @David Lee this was probably one of the best reviews I have heard so far, and by best I mean fair. Great work!

  • Totally disagree to the last bit, I have a 2014 Mac and the sole reason I am not upgrading is because of the touchbar, until apple wakes and realised people don’t like it the better, I know two people who have touchbar Mac, both had to get the screens replaced, so it’s hard no from me

    john smithjohn smith2 päivää sitten
  • "Two ports is a downgrade for many" - mate, it's not really. By far the best selling Mac is the two-port Air, followed by the two-port MBP13. These are the machines that these replace. The downgrade is true on the mini (four to two), but that's not a massive selling machine. In mitigation for mini users, they're USB4 so support proper TB hubs now. Four port versions of all these machines are still available (except Air which has never been four port). Albeit with Intel CPUs. For me, the bigger restriction on the 1st generation is being limited to 16GB RAM
